Liebermann recorded this plein-air motif in his sketchbook while in Holland in the summer of 1889. The following winter he executed the painting in his Berlin studio. It seems to capture a specific moment and yet conveys at once, through the rigid composition, the hardship and solitude as well as the greatness and endurance of this peasant life.
